The Iranian government denies Microsoft’s allegations related to the alleged attacks against individuals involved in the upcoming 2020 US presidential election.

Microsoft announced to have detected a new wave of attacks carried out by Chinese, Iranian, and Russian state-sponsored hackers against the US election. Threat actors had tried to compromise email accounts belonging to people associated with the Biden and Trump election campaigns.

The company attributed the attacks against the APT groups tracked as Strontium (Russia), Zirconium (China), and Phosphorus (Iran).

Microsoft added that the “majority of these attacks” were detected and blocked.

Now the Iranian government denies Microsoft’s allegations related to these alleged attacks against the upcoming 2020 US presidential election

“The United States, which has for decades been meddling in the elections of other countries such as Iran, is in no place to make such absurd claims,” states the comment of Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh reported by the news agency IRNA that reported.

“For Tehran, it does not matter who is in the White House. What matters is Washington’s commitment to international rights, rules and norms, not meddling in others’ affairs and acting on their commitments.”

Tensions between Tehran and Washington have escalated since 2018 when President Trump reimposed sanctions on Iran. The situation went out of control after a US drone strike killed top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani in January.

The order to kill Soleimani was issued by President Trump that said Soleimani was planning an “imminent” attack on US personnel in Baghdad.

In January, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued warnings about the possibility of cyber-attacks launched by Iran-linked threat actors. The attacks could be the response of Teheran after Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani was killed by a U.S. drone airstrike at the Baghdad airport in Iraq.

Representatives of the Iranian Government declared that they have no preference for any of the Presidential candidates in the 2020 election.
